Spicebush Swallowtail.... 2 months early
Well, I have learned the hard way that any overwintering butterfly chrysalises should be kept in the fridge until flowers are blooming. This was my first try with rearing Spicebush Swallowtails and I had a lot of conflicting information about how to keep them over winter. They are fine in the house, they need to be outside, put them in the fridge, spritz them with water every month, etc. I decided to leave them in my office by the window as I was thinking maybe they go by the length of daylight or something? At any rate I guess they don't because one of them emerged this morning! There are no flowers to be seen and the Spicebush is only just blooming this week and won't have leaves for a while. I feel so bad for it since all I can do is just let it free outside. It will probably starve if a bird doesn't get it. I put up 5 hummingbird feeders with sugar water so that it would have something at least if it decided to hang around my yard. If I raise these again they will be kept in the fridge until there are flowers out.

WOW how beautiful!! Since we have had a milder winter this year, maybe he will make it! Your spice bush is farther along than mine!
Thanks for the pictures!
