moving a large shrub / small tree

Has anyone had success moving a large shrub or small tree by themselves?

I planted a Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) 4 years ago and it's about 8 feet tall now (maybe slightly less). It's planted on the front corner of the house and now we are talking about putting a porch on and the Spicebush is right in the way. I hate to loose it but I don't know that I could move it. I called a local landscaping company but they charge $54 an hour and it would probably be several hours of work to dig it, trim it, wrap it and get it into a new hole.

My options are basically cut it down and buy a new tiny one to plant elsewhere or try to move it myself. I know I couldn't even lift it myself even if I did dig it out though so how do you move a small tree? I can get man power to help me but what do I do, like get a tarp underneath it and pull it across the yard to it's new home? How much do I cut it back so that it can handle the move? Am I crazy to even try?

The reason I really want this is because it attracts Spicebush Swallowtails and we are on really the upper edge of their range. I had them for the first time last year and I'm hoping they come back. No one around here carries the tree so I had to order it online and I'm guessing I could find it again but I hate to loose 4 years of growth

Well I did move a tree that was about 9 foot tall and it lived.

I'm no expert, but the way I see it, it's not going to hurt to try. I would cut it back to about 2 1/2 or 3 foot tall, try to dig as many of the roots as you can, dig a hole bigger around than what all the roots are, plant it at the same depth that it is now, make sure you loosen the soil good that you will be putting back in, and water it really good, everyday.

If it doen't make it then you can buy a new one, but I would give it a try. My spice bush seems to be pretty tuff so yours might just make the move.
