What would you say if I told you how to make a raised bed garden at $0.00 cost
That I could show you how to have raised bed gardens and it wouldn't cost you anything but your time, by using recycled materials.
For the past 3 years in 4-H I do a horticulture project for the fair, each year my project is chosen to go to the state fair, this is my last year in 4-H, so I want to make a special project this year. I am making $0.00 cost raised bed gardens, including the materials for making the raised beds, for the soil mix that I will be using, for the plants I will be growing, and for the added nutrients the plants need throughout the garden season, all by using recycled materials.
If your interested in seeing my progress from begging to end, just give me a reply to this post, and I will post my progress from start to finish.
Thanks!

My Garden cost me $0.00
My project has started and the cost so far is $0.00. I have 6 raised gardens, and a $0.00 cost compost bin.
Ok..pictures of the $o.oo cost raised garden
First I used wooden pallets for the frame of the raised garden. The cost of the pallets were $0.00. I removed some of the top boards, but not all of them. I used the boards I took off the top to nail on the sides to seal any open areas that would let the soil come out. Under the pallet raised gardens I placed several layers of recycled newspapers at $0.00 cost, no landscape cloth needed.
Re: What would you say if I told you how to make a raised bed garden at $0.00 cost
Some of the gardens are made with reclaimed wood from construction or wooden crates.
Re: What would you say if I told you how to make a raised bed garden at $0.00 cost
The soil inside I made myself, and the cost was $0.00.
The main things in the soil mix I made.
Rabbit manure
worm castings
leaves from the trees in the fall
homemade compost

I grow heirloom plants and save the seeds, I trade seeds and plants with other gardeners so I can have a variety of plants at $0.00 cost.
I make newspaper pots to start the seeds in instead of buying plastic or other plant starters.

The plants are starting to grow.
As the garden grows I will add more worm castings, and rabbit manure.
Cabbage, Kale, curly Kale, lettuce and some pansies.

$0.00 cost growing containers. I used recycled plastic pot containers to grow in, I stacked these on a metal rod.

Potatoes, cucumbers and squash are planted at the end so they can climb on the pallet.

Re: What would you say if I told you how to make a raised bed garden at $0.00 cost
You can ask questions if you want, I'll do my best to answer them for you.
You may wonder why I left some of those boards on the top instead of taking them all off.
One thing to know is the garden is full to the maximum of plants now, I don't need to plant more in this garden, unless I completely harvest a plant like the lettuce or cabbage and have an open spot to plant something new. There is 16 Kale plants, 6 cabbage, 6 lettuce and the 8 Pansies. The boards will help keep the plants separated. But they serve an even better purpose, the roots to those plants will spread under those boards, the boards will provide shade for the roots, and they will help retain moister for the roots as well.
You can't ask for a better looking garden than this one, and what did it cost? $0.00

All the gardens are looking good.
the sugar snap peas are starting to climb on the ornamental grass canes
The tomatoes are starting to bloom
The potatoes are really growing, and the cucumber vines and squash vines at the end are starting to grow good too
The green beans have sprouted, radishes, carrots and bush cucumbers.

Re: What would you say if I told you how to make a raised bed garden at $0.00 cost
I have had several harvest these past couple of weeks. 3 butter crunch lettuce, twice we had enough asparagus for dinner for 3 people. I have harvested Kale twice, picking 24 leaves at a time. Had to share the Kale with the rabbits, they just love it! And twice I harvested green onions, picking around 10 to each harvest.

Some of the gardens are several years old, made from reclaimed wood from shipping crates.

Today's harvest, green onions and radishes. A lot of Kale and lettuce also.
Re: What would you say if I told you how to make a raised bed garden at $0.00 cost
The gardens are looking great, the beans are about to bloom, I have a few little cucumbers coming on, the potatoes have almost reached the top of the pallet standing on it's side, the asparagus, kale, lettuce, onions, radishes have been really producing a lot! Stating to get some small broccoli heads, and a few tomatoes are starting to make.
Yes I would say that my $0.00 cost pallet and reclaimed wood raised beds, filled with my $0.00 cost soil mix made of, worm castings, rabbit manure, fall leaves, and my own vegetable compost that I made is going to turn out great!
