I tried the old garden style but and converting to the SFG method this fall. Have built my boxes and deer fence so all I need is Mels mix and trellises as I have 2 boxes that are 4x8 and will need two trellises. Now I have Mels SFG book and he suggests using conduit but I am leaning toward 1/2" PVC pipe with rebarb inside the pipe on the legs and the span with a Tee in the middle for 3 legs total for an 8 foot length and a 6 foot rebarb inside the PVC pipe in the top.
Any suggestions??????

Hi Floyd.
Our neighbor has a 8 foot length trellis made similar to what you are describing and he has not had any problems with it.
I have made wooden ones that didn't make it thru the high winds.
I have made one from steel post and cow panels that worked great, I just had to cut the panels to the length I needed.
Let us know what you decide and how it works out for you.

Re: WOO HOO :)
How high should I build my trellis for tomatoes and peas as I do not know how high they will grow?

Re: WOO HOO :)
Floyd they both will grow tall but you don't have to make it as tall as they will grow. My advice and what I do myself is just make it about 6 feet tall. If they grow taller than that, they will just fall over and hang down but they still will grow.
For my tomatoes, I use a stake and then tie the tomato plant to it as it grows. I also cut off the side suckers and just keep it to one or two main stems. The suckers will make tomatoes, but if you cut the suckers off the tomatoes on the main stem will grow bigger.

Thanks for all the pictures as your gardens look great! I noticed you stake all your tomatoes. Have you ever used nylon netting?
